The Peel — Week 9

At the start of your nursing career, your ambitions may have felt broad and exciting: get through orientation, build confidence at the bedside, become the kind of nurse patients and colleagues rely on. Maybe you pictured what your future would look like in five years — a specialty you love, a rhythm that fits, a team that feels like your own.
But the midpoint of your first summers on the floor feel different. You’ve had your hands in real work now — taking report, managing priorities, navigating the unexpected — and those once-vague goals are beginning to take clearer shape. Not because everything suddenly makes sense, but because you’ve been in it long enough to know what really matters.
This stage, somewhere between fresh start and full fluency, is when a dream stops being hypothetical and starts turning into a direction. That’s exactly where you are.
Clinical Survival Kit

It’s tempting to treat goals like a checklist: pass this, master that, land the dream job. But the more you move through real-life clinical spaces, the more you realize your most sustainable goals aren’t about status or speed. They’re about alignment.
What kind of environments help you stay calm and focused? What kinds of patients make you feel most connected to your purpose? What skills feel energizing, not just impressive? If you can articulate that, even roughly, then you’re not just dreaming. You’re steering.
Try writing down two versions of your career vision: one you imagined before the summer started, and one that reflects what you’ve learned since. Don’t force clarity. Just notice what shifted. The goal here isn’t to decide your future. It’s to recognize that your experience is shaping it already.
One Last Thing 💡
This stage of the summer may feel messy, stretched, or strangely in-between. But it’s also when you start making decisions that are shaped by real experience, not just advice, textbooks, or pressure. Don’t be afraid to revise your dream. You’re not giving up on it. You’re learning how to build it.
And you’re doing that right now.
